How to prepare for a job interview

Interviewing for a job can be so nerve racking, but it doesn’t have to be.  Raw Recruitment Solutions a recruitment company in wales has provided the below content to help you with your next interview.

There are different types of interviews that you as a candidate could come across, these include:

  • Telephone
  • Video
  • 1-1
  • Panel interview
  • Group Interview

Telephone interview

A telephone interview is first used to weed out candidates not suitable to a job.  These are often used when a job gets a high amount of applicants, a telephone interview is also usually one of the first steps before being invited to a face to face interview.

Video interviews usually conducted over apps like skype are becoming more and more popular.  And once again are usually used before being invited to a face to face meeting.

A panel interview can be nerve racking when you haven’t experienced one before, but if you go in knowing that there are going to be at least two or more people interviewing you then at least you are prepared for that.

Group Interviews

Group interviews are when multiple candidates are interviewed together.  They are asked to discuss certain topics and usually answer questions in turn.

if you are accepted for an interview ask the recruiter what type of interview it will be, this will allow you to at least prepare accordingly.

Preparing for the interview

Before the interview is probably one of the most important times when it comes to accepting an interview, at this stage you need to prepare your self for possible questions that they may ask.  Come up with suitable answers and also write down a list of possible questions that you may want to ask the employee.

At this point you will also want to make sure that you are prepared for how you are going to look in the interview.  You should look clean and presentable and you should also wear clothes that are suitable for the job in question.

I would also recommend visiting the place that you have to drive to the night before so that you can plan your journey ahead of time, being late to an interview is a big no no, so be early at least 10 minutes.

What you should take to the interview

You once again should be prepared.  Notice a theme here? preparation.

make sure you have any certificates that you may need, a driving license, the job description, pen and paper, your CV and a portfolio if your in a tech field.

Killing your nerves

Nerves can make the perfect candidate fall apart, being nervous is normal so here are a few things that you can do to calm down your pre interview nerves:

  • take a toilet break before the interview
  • remind yourself that the worst that can happen is you don’t get the job
  • give your self time to answer the questions
  • practice job interview questions ahead of time
  • take notes with you
  • ask for clarification on questions you are not sure about

You would be surprised how many potential candidates fail in interviews simply because they don’t prepare for them.  With the above tips you are already ahead of the competition so, read and re-read them until they stick in your mind.

beat the unemployment blues

If you have recently lost your job, quit your job or have been found unemployed then don’t stress, we will help.

Reassess your financial priorities

Take a look at things that need to be paid and things that you can just cancel.

Your mortgage/rent has to be paid, along with any contracts.  To cut down on your expenditure cut anything that is not essential.  Phone bill? cancel or down size the bill.  Sky TV, cut it or downsize.  Eating out a few times a week? you now live on beans on toast.

Focus on the skills that matter

See what skills are in demand and learn them.  Being unemployed doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom, use your new free time to learn a new skill.  See what jobs are asking for and then look at potential new skills that you could learn to give you a leg up on the competition.

Strengthen your brand
Make your brand stand out from the crowd by:

Build a website

if your self employe then your website is one of the most important sales tools that you have.  Don’t neglect your own website.  Don’t get one cheaply made either, this makes you look like you don’t care about your business.

Get some business cards printed

Get some business cards printed online, they don’t need to be the expensive ones, just get ones that show your contact information and tell people what you do.  Give the business cards out to people that might be able to help you.

Keep your spirits up

Being out of work can make even the sanest of people lose it, but don’t stress, there are plenty of opportunities out there if you look hard enough.  With the above tips you should have enough to get you started, but make no mistake this world can be tough and you have to keep going.

To keep your spirits up try to get out of the house, try to exercise more and don’t fall into the trap of sitting around in your pajamas.  When you look good, you will feel good.
